CUD: The lambchop email list

1998 CUD 1999 CUD 2000 CUD

HEY!

In case you didn't notice, Lambchop has an email list. I send out updates as often as possible. Here are all the messages from 1998 (since August when it began). To subscribe, see the main page.

12-30-98

Howdy,
It's been a little while since the last update and I've added bit to the page. For those of you who just joined the list, I've put all the old mailouts in on a page called "old cud". If you go to the main page, you'll see it in the left frame. Also, I've added my impression of the dec 18th atlanta show to the "reviews" page, again in the left frame. Lyrics have been added for the militant, all smiles and mariachi, for which we are truly thankful, the man who loved beer, and we never argue. I'll try to add more soon.
A radio program dedicated to lambchop was done in chile last week.
Lambchop has added a show date: they're playing at the bowery ballroom in nyc on jan 9th, the day after they appear on conan with vic chesnutt.
Again, the atlanta show was wonderful. The best part was the thanks I got from the band, Dennis Cronin and from Mary Wagner for the page and support of the band. If any of you would like to email the wagners, their email is now up at the "contact" page. They'd love to hear from the fans.
If anyone sees anything in a magazine or on the web or would like to tell me about one of the shows, please email me and I'll add it to the page.
Merry Christmas,
Happy Hannakuh,
Happy New Year,
Dope Kwanzaa,
Aloha
means goodbye, and also hello.
It's in how you inflect.
Jamie
PS I have to say the new bob dylan bootleg series vol. 4 (1966 'royal albert hall' concert) rocks my punk rock ass. Get it. Also, david grubbs is all thumbs on his new one. That coming from a big gastr del sol fan.

12-17-98

Howdy,
It's been a little while since the last update, but not a whole lot has happened, as far as I know. My friend, Pinkteeth in Nashville, told me that Lambchop played the song from A Charlie Brown Christmas at the recent Nashville Tower Records show. Apparently, they've also recorded it (both a radio and a bleeped version), but I have no idea if it'll be released or not.
First semester is over now, thankfully. To celebrate I went record shopping and much to my disbelief I saw three, count 'em 3, copies of the richard norris (jack the tab) remixes of lambchop's version of curtis mayfield's "give me your love (love song)." Apparently only 400 were pressed so get them while you can. It has the logo for City Slang Records (along with For Us Records), so I imagine it may not be as difficult to find in Europe. I found it at satellite records, but also saw two copies at rewind records (both in the little five points area of atlanta, GA). Each store had it for $10. It is the true bastard child of techno and country. I think funk got to watch. Richard Norris is under the name doppleganger, but the record is under lambchop. Look for it in your local hip-hop/dance record stores. In case you're interested, Satellite records (which had it in the trip-hop section) has other branches in the US and can be reached at
NYC: 212-780-9305
Boston: 617-536-5482
Atlanta: 404-880-9746
When I listened to it, I just kept imagining DJ Ron spinning this at the connection in Nashville. Hmmm...
Anyhow, again--in case you didn't see--Lambchop has a western US coast tour lined up (dates in the works) after their Jan 8 appearance on conan o'brien with Vic chesnutt.
I added two articles/reviews of Vic's "the salesman and bernadette" to the articles section. One is from the Atlanta Creative Loafing and the other is from the Nashville Scene. Lambchop plays with Vic Chesnutt here in Atlanta tomorrow evening and I'm getting pumped like a dog in heat.
I just wanna be your tugboat captain,
Jamie

Howdy,
PIPIN' HOT NEWS:
Lambchop will play with Vic Chesnutt Jan. 8th, 1999 on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. For the CUD readers overseas who may not know, Conan O'Brien is the host who took over for David Letterman in 1993 in the coveted slot that follows the Tonight Show (which was hosted by Steve Allen, Jack Parr, and Johnny Carson prior to Jay Leno). Conan is in his sixth season now and has the highest rated show in his time slot (aside from being one of the most watched TV talk show hosts overall). Several million people watch his show every night. Again, the appearance on Conan should happen around the time of the broadcast of their performance with Vic Chesnutt for PBS's Studio at West 54th series (although no exact broadcast date yet). Congrats to the band.
DRIVIN BACK TO CALI, CALI:
Lambchop also has some shows scheduled for the west coast (LA, and SF, and a radio broadcast near San Diego) in January as well. Exact dates to come.
If you haven't already, go pick up Lambchop's "What another man spills" and Vic Chesnutt's "The Salesman and Bernadette." They're both fantastic--but not as good as Samuel L. Jackson and 3 guys playing horse.
I was turned to steel in the great magnetic field,
Jamie

Howdy,
Just a quick note:
After lambchop's free show in nashville this saturday at the tower records, their next date will be in atlanta on dec 18th. This will be their first time playing atlanta. They'll play solo and then back up vic chesnutt to close the show, which is at variety playhouse.
Later skaters.

Howdy,
Just a quick note this week:
Lambchop will play a free show at the Nashville Tower Records. The show will be this saturday, December 5th at 5pm. Be there or be oblong.
Vic Chesnutt plays atlanta on December 18th. I still haven't heard whether or not lambchop will be joining them. If they do, I think it will be their first show in atlanta. If anybody has the scoop, please let me know.
I'll try to add some more lyrics, but they likely will not be added until at least Dec. 17th, when teacher lets the monkeys out.
Later skaters.

Howdy,
So I thought lambchop got its biggest exposure on the lollapalooza '94 tour. That is all about to change. If you're in NYC this weekend, you might be in luck. This sunday, 11-15-98, the PBS program "Sessions" will record Vic Chesnutt with Lambchop. I don't know when it will be aired, but at the end of this message is what I was told as to how to get tickets. Tonight's (saturday's) recording is of chocolate genius on the same program.
At the recent CMJ show in NYC at the threadwaxing space, 6 members of lambchop along with their friends in other bands at the merge fest made up the lineup that evening. And oh yeah, 2 members of yo la tengo helped them out as well. Chalk up another music big guy to becoming a lambchop fan: David Byrne was seen in the audience that evening. Also for you yo la fans, the end credits to the simpsons this weekend will be performed by them.
Vic Chesnutt is playing Dec. 18 at the variety playhouse in atlanta. I'm hopeful that lambchop will play the gig and I'll let you know if they do. Either way, I'm there dude.
Check out the new issue (Nov-Dec '98) of No Depression magazine. There's a lengthy article about Lambchop member Paul Burch and his own band: Paul Burch and the WPA ballclub. For you nashvillians, the article's written by the nashville scene's jim ridley. In the same issue, there's also a great review of the new Vic Chesnutt album: The Salesman and Bernadette (now available in both the US and overseas).
I've only gotten one response to the discussion idea proposed in the last update of CUD, so please write back if you want to do it. I'll be giving the results of my query to the guy who proposed it soon.
It's times like these that I wished my abode was in NYC. Later skaters.
Jamie
(i didn't add in the how to get tix part as in the email.)

Howdy all and welcome new members.
(We're up around 40 now)
I just got back from a dream attack that took me by surprise...well actually it was 6 hour test on monday. I survived and hopefully will be able update the page and CUD more often--for a little while at least.
I just added lyrics to Theöne, Interrupted, Schucks, Nine, and Moody Fucker.
I also added an article from November's Stomp and Stammer to the articles section. The interview in the article was done right after Kurt and the rest of the gang got back from Europe.
Check out the quote of the week:
"So which one of you is DJ CoolHands?"--Kurt Wagner's first words to WRVU's Pinkteeth and CoolHands on the plane back to Nashville after CMJ. Kurt had never met either one prior to the plane ride. That's one hell of a guess.
In the news:
Vic Chesnutt's The Salesman and Bernadette should be on the US store shelves as of yesterday. The album, which has been out in Europe for some time now, is finally getting released stateside. The album was recorded about a year ago and lambchop has been playing on and off with Vic Chesnutt throughout the year (including a recent stint in Europe with Vic and Calexico). The official Lambchop home page (http://www.lambchop.ml.org) has some great live tracks on real audio from the recent tour of Europe, including
"Begin" live from Zurich on October 11th
"Your Fucking Sunny Day" live from Munich on October 8th
I've changed the look of the page a little bit and hope to continue to do so in the future. Tell me what you think is missing or could be improved.
A Lambchop discussion group was suggested to me via email. I want to know what everyone thinks about this. Personally, I think it's a nifty idea, but I won't be running it--another fan will. If you've ever been on one of these discussion groups, you know what it's like and can be like. The guided by voices Postal Blowfish discussion group can end up being nothing about GBV at all and the Sun Ra list usually ends up being the quintessential jazz snob discussion group. I love jazz, used to do a radio show of jazz, but felt ill reading that list sometimes. I should hope that a lambchop discussion group will not turn out the same, and I don't think it would. So, I will not automatically place you on this discussion group, but give me some feedback if you think it's worthwhile. I just wanted to put in my nickel's worth.
A nickel poorer,
Jamie

Howdy,
I was a-lookin' on the cmj music marathon homepage at
http://www.cmj.com/Marathon98/
and I found the following for you lucky NYCity slickers:
November:
6th Merge CMJ Fest in NYC: Lambchop with Versus, Ladybug Transistor, Magnetic Fields, others at Threadwaxing Space. Lambchop closes the show.
7th Checkered Past CMJ show in NYC: Paul Burch & WPA Ballclub go on at 1am at the Rodeo Bar.
Also in Novemeber
20th Paul Burch at The Sutler in Nashville- Record release for Wire To Wire
I've gotten word from one of the cud eaters that a lambchop singles collection will come out on merge sometime next year. There is an article on lambchop in a free atlanta local magazine called (i think) "stop and stammer." Two pages about the new album. If you can't get your hands on it, don't fret. I'm going to put the article on the page after monday (big test then).
Later skaters.

Howdy all and welcome new members,
The lambchop tour of Europe is over. All reports I've heard say that it went very well and only the show in Gent was cancelled.
Some other news:
Lambchop's newest: What Another Man Spills is Mojo Magazine's "Americana Album of the Month" for October.
Vic Chesnutt's The Salesman and Burnadette on PLR (Pinnacle Label Records) in Europe, features Lambchop throughout, and will be released domestically in November on Capricorn Records.
Lambchop recently performed Curtis Mayfield's "Give Me Your Love" on French national television before 1.5 million people.
Supposedly, British DJ Richard Norris (formerly of The Grid and Jack TheTab) will do a 12" remix of Lambchop‘s version of the Curtis Mayfield classic. It will be in VERY limited release through For Us Records (a label run by some good folks at one of London’s Rough Trade shops), sometime at the end of October. More on that later (a.k.a. send me info).
For those of you who have been asking who I am and how I came to do the lambchop page, can check it out at the bottom of the homepage by clicking on the "me" part of "A little about ME" or by going to http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/Opry/4267/me.html
Thanks for joining and again, send me any reviews or news of them being published in any magazines.
Jamie
PS for those of you who want to know, members of CUD include natives of switzerland, france, USA, UK, spain, and several other countries, I believe.

Howdy,
Here's a message John Delworth's wife sent about a date change as well as a progress report:
>I spoke with him while he was in the Netherlands playing the festival. They're playing at the same time as Maggie Estep and the Handsome Family. They are being very well received at every venue.
>With one exception: Their appearance at the Border Crossing Festival in Gent, Belgium on Sunday has been cancelled, due to low ticket sales for the whole festival. They are playing in Cologne tomorrow and may stay an additional day there.
Thanks for all the help and interest.
Jamie

Howdy all,
I've been really busy with school recently, so I haven't done a whole lot to the page until today. I added that great article from the Independent that was posted to the list a couple of weeks back to the Articles section. I messed around with some coding I found out about recently and in my amateurish ways I finally got this picture carousel working. Tell me what you think. If it's really annoying, I'll get rid of it.
It seems as though Lambchop will play CMJ Fest in NYC this November, but exact locations are not certain just yet. Lambchop is playing on French national television, and again, I hear they have quite a large audience. The show is on October 12th, it's called "Nulle part ailleurs," and it airs from 7 pm to 8:30pm on CANAL+. Thanks to all for running down that info for me.
Again, if you've found any good articles on the web about the new album, just let me know. Please send it directly to me only and then I'll send it out to everyone.
Also, I've been told that an alternate version of gloria leonard appears on the never kept a diary compilation. Full details in the discography section.

Your fact-checkin' cuz,
Jamie
http://listen.to/lambchop
is the same as
http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/Opry/4267
PS If anyone sees any shows in Europe, let me know how they went.
PPS For anyone who's interested, a new silver jews album with both DC Berman and steve malkmus comes out later this month. Also, a compiled live CD of pavement performances is slated for release sometime soon.

Howdy,
The big news: Lambchop's tour of Europe seems to be going quite well. "What another man spills" is #35 in Norway. Vic Chesnutt's "The Salesman and Burnadette" has been released on Pinnacle Label Records in the UK.
If you're in France in the next few weeks, make note: On October 12th, they'll be playing on a national TV program in France, although I don't know the name of it. Apparently 2 million people watch the show. A national french radio will also broadcast soon some songs Kurt Wagner recorded a few days ago. And October 13th they play paris (check the homepage for the location).
Lambchop is currently working out the specifics of playing the CMJ fest in NY (which they played last year as well) on Nov. 6th with Paul Burch.
Last week, CBC Radio 2 (Canadian Radio) had a 1hour feature on lambchop broadcast in canada and on the web in Real Audio.
I've put a new poster onto the picture pages. It was the flyer posted around Nashville in November of 1994 when Lambchop opened for Doo Rag the first time at Lucy's Record shop. The second time, Doo Rag played on the curb because they wanted to drink and you couldn't do that inside Lucy's cuz it wasn't a bar. No problems, though as they just used 9volt battery power for their bullhorns and megaphones.
Thanks to all for keeping me updated on the news overseas and thanks for your continued interest in the band. If you see any lengthy reviews of the new album, please let me know. So far I've only seen blurbs in some smaller magazines, one in Norweigian, and CMJ gave a short review as its pick of the week. If you know anyone who would like to be on the list, just let me know.

Howdy,
Several of you have been asking about the cover songs on "what another man spills." Here is what I have gathered by searching the net:
Life #2 and King of Nothing never written by F.M. Cornog--East River Pipe. Life #2 is unreleased and king was a B-side on the Miracleland 7", released in the U.K. only by Shinkansen.
it's not alright written by James McNew--from the CD "I Can Hear Music" from James McNew's band called Dump
give me your love (love song) written by Curtis Mayfield; performed by him on his sountrack to the movie "Superfly"
i've been lonely for so long written by Posie Knight and Jerry Walker. Performed on Frederick Knight's album of the same title on Stax/Fantasy records. Later covered by the rolling stones.
Also of note, a grateful dead lyric is: "One man finds what another man spills."
I've added the press release from the hank album to the discography section.
Enjoy.

Howdy,
I have news from the Vic Chesnutt page that a correction and good news is in order. Apparently Vic has signed onto Capricorn records, who will release The Salesman and Burnadette domestically in November. PLR is reported to release it non-domestically in October, but no specific dates are known at this time.

Howdy all,
The Five Star Thrift Shop(owned by CYOD's Marky Nevers' wife) is hosting an end of summer bash this saturday, August 22, from 3pm to twilight. Once again, the afternoon is free and open to the public, and people can bring lawn chairs and coolers. The musical lineup includes Josh Rouse, Ann Tiley, CYOD, the return of Tony Guides founder James Clauer, David Cloud's Gospel of Power, Laurel Parton's reformed Trauma Team, the Cherry Blossoms, Bluesman John Smiff XXV, several Lambchop side projects, and Paul Burch's R&B cover band the Smoky Bacon Combo; the bands will play from 3 p.m. till twilight. The main attraction, however, may well be Nevers' Jamaican hot chicken, made with a Caribbean pepper called the "purple devil." Dishes of curried rice and beans will also be on hand for the meat-impaired.
The Five Star General Store is located at 1118 Halcyon St. across from Corner Music on 12th Avenue South; it's open noon to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Call 615-386-0104 for more information.
I put an article about this as well as an announcement about the show on the page. Later skaters. Jamie http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/Opry/4267

Howdy,
Since I've had more people access the lambchop page than expected, I figured maybe a mailing list should get started. I plan on this being like an open forum for any and all partakers. I also plan on posting any updates on the homepage to this list. If anyone does not wish to be a part of this, please reply to this with "unsubscribe your@email" in the subject and I'll remove you ASAP. Thanks for all your support.
